"Search in" The pull-down menus indicate which index you need to use for the search term you have put in. The four pre-selected search fields can be changed. Click on the relevant arrow button for a list and choose the field you would like to use.
Detailed explanations of each search field can be found on the relevant index guidance page under "Help (index)".

Search words Here you need to type in a search term that is related to the selected "Search in" field on the left.
Spelling: you can use all lower case or upper and lower case to input text, as the program is not case sensitive. Use of umlauts and ß is optional, as are accents. However, if you do not use an umlaut or the ß character, these must be transcribed (e.g. ä written as "ae" and ß as "ss"). For special characters from foreign languages please use the simple form.

Truncation All search words are automatically truncated.

Index If you click the accompanying Index button when you have keyed in a search word, you will access an index guidance page, which features a brief explanation of your chosen search field and some examples. If you click on "Start Search,", you will find an alphabetical or numerical page from the relevant index. The search word which you entered appears at the beginning of the list and the number of results is given in brackets.
If you click on an entry in the index which has only one hit, you will see a full title straight away; otherwise you will see a list of short titles. If a listing in the index appears greyed out, it indicates a secondary form of the name and the official form of the name is given next to it. If you click on this official name (shown in colour) you will be taken to the place in the index with the results of your search.

Year of publication You can use this field to restrict your search results to the year or time span of publication. Please note that years must be typed in full. The following forms of entry are possible:
1999 [all publications from one year]
1985- [or: 1985 - ] [all publications from 1985 inclusive]
-2000 [or: - 2000] [all publications up to 2000 inclusive]
>1985 [or: > 1985] [all publications after 1985]
<2000 [or: < 2000] [all publications before 2000]
1985-2000 [or: 1985 - 2000] [all publications in this time span]

Search examples If you are unsure how search terms should be expressed, please see the relevant index guidance page. It provides search examples and brief explanations of their respective search terms. Detailed explanations are available by clicking the "Help (Index)" button on the index guidance page.
